LED driver is just the voltage converter that can convert the power supply into a specific voltage and current to drive the LED lighting fixturers .

Under normal circumstances, the input of the LED driver power supply includes high-voltage power frequency AC (i.e. city power), low-voltage DC, high-voltage DC, low-voltage and high-frequency AC (such as the output of an electronic transformer), and so on. The output current of the LED driver is mostly a constant current that can change the voltage with the change of the forward voltage drop of the LEDs.

The core components of the LED power supply include switching controllers, inductors, switching components (MOSFET), feedback resistors, input filter components, output filter components, and so on. According to the requirements of different occasions, there are also input over-voltage protection circuits, input under-voltage protection circuits, LED open-circuit protection, over-current protection, and other circuits.

Classified by driving method

1.Constant current

The output current of the constant current drive circuit is constant, but the output DC voltage varies within a certain range with the size of the load resistance. The smaller the load resistance, the lower the output voltage. The larger the load resistance, the output voltage will also be larger. The constant current circuit is not afraid of the load short circuit, but it is strictly forbidden to open the load completely. A constant current drive circuit is ideal for driving LEDs, but the price is relatively high.

2.Stabilized

When the various parameters in the voltage stabilizing circuit are determined, the output voltage is fixed, but the output current changes with the increase or decrease of the load. The voltage stabilizing circuit is not afraid of open load, but it is strictly forbidden to short-circuit the load. Drive with voltage stabilization circuit, each string needs to add a suitable resistance to make an average brightness. So the brightness will be affected by the voltage change from the rectification.

1. Need High reliability

Especially like the driving power of LED street lights, it is inconvenient to maintain when installed on a high pole.

2. High efficiency

LED is an energy-saving product, and the efficiency of the driving power supply should be high. With the high efficiency, its power consumption is small, therefore the heat generated in the lamp is small, and the temperature rise of the lamp is reduced. It is beneficial to delay the light decay of LED.

3.High power factor

The power factor is the requirement of the power grid on the load. Generally, there are no mandatory indicators for household appliances below 70 watts. Although the power factor of a single electrical appliance with low power is lower, it has little effect on the power grid, but a large number of lighting fixtures used at night and too concentrated similar loads will cause serious pollution to the power grid.

4.Drive mode

There are two types currently in use: one is a constant voltage source for multiple constant current sources, and each constant current source individually supplies power to each LED. In this way, the combination is flexible, and the failure of one LED will not affect other LEDs, but the cost will be slightly higher. The other is direct constant current power supply, which is the driving method adopted by some driver manufacturers. The advantage is that the cost is a little bit lower, but the flexibility is poor, and it is necessary to solve the problem of a certain LED failure without affecting the operation of other LEDs.

5.Surge protection.

The ability of LED to resist surge is relatively poor, especially the ability to resist reverse voltage. It is also important to strengthen protection in this area. Some LED lights are installed outdoors, such as LED street lights. Due to the initiation of the grid load and the induction of lightning strikes, various surges will invade the grid system, and some surges will cause damage to the LED.

6.Protection function

In addition to the conventional protection functions of the power supply, it is best to add negative feedback of the temperature to prevent the LED’s temperature from becoming too high. It must meet the requirements of safety regulations and electromagnetic compatibility.

Compared with the overall constant current, although the channel-by-channel constant current has more disadvantages, the cost is also higher. But it can really protect the LED and prolong the life of the LED, so constant current is the future trend.
